Avoiding daily healthcare job stress is the number one single factor in avoiding "burn-out."  


Healthcare jobs are one field with the highest rates of staff "burn-out." Burn-out is a result of healthcare job stress. This is when staff members become over worked and experience signs of fatigue, high rates of sick calls and poor moral. The long shifts and demands of jobs in the healthcare industry are one tough side to this rewarding career path.

The issues that arise in healthcare jobs include many factors such as; staffing issues, increased patient census during flu season, overloaded emergency rooms and budget cuts in healthcare. No matter what healthcare discipline you work in, at some point you may experience healthcare job stress and need a break from it all. This is very normal in the healthcare industry and learning to deal with it will help make your healthcare career the most rewarding career ever.

There are several ways to avoid healthcare job stress regardless of the hours that you work or how many patients you see in a day. Whether it is a 8 hour shift or a 12 hour shift, you need to take time for yourself and do things to make your workday flow as smoothly as possible. Using simple techniques can help you recharge your batteries and keep up with the demands.

Start your day with "you time." Give yourself extra time in the morning to do things you like to do. Have coffee outside and listen to the birds. Meditate or do Yoga. Try not to think about work, until you get to work.

Take your breaks. Even if you are busy, remember to take your breaks. You need to get away from the noise and stimulation. Take your breaks in a quiet area away from monitors, machines and call lights. This will help recharge you to handle the rest of your shift.

Eat healthy at work and at home. To help your body cope with healthcare job stress, you need to feed your body well. Eating a healthy balanced diet will help your body cope. You need extra B vitamins, protein and carbohydrates. Eating 6 small meals throughout the day will keep your blood sugar levels even and prevent fatigue.

Leave work at work when your shift is over. Patient care can only be done in the hospital. Unless you are "on-call" for the night, try not to think about work after you leave. As soon as you walk out the door, you are on you time again. Enjoy your rest!

As exciting and rewarding as a career in healthcare is, it can be a tough occupation. People's lives are in your hands, and you need to be on your game at all times when caring for the sick.
