Biomedical Engineer

A biomedical engineer is a person who would combine the skills of biology with engineering. He/she would analyze and design solutions to the problems that are arising in the fields of biology and medicine. The primary of a biomedical engineer would be to improve the quality as well as the effectiveness of patient care.

Where do they work? Most typically, the biomedical engineers would work in the following places:

The roles and responsibilities of a biomedical engineer would include the following:

  • Designing of the products as well as systems like:

    • Artificial internal organs

    • Machines for the purpose of diagnosing the medical problems



  • Installing, adjusting, maintaining, repairing and providing technical support for biomedical equipments

How to Become a Biomedical Engineer?

Educational Requirements:

Typically, a biomedical engineer would require a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering obtained from an accredited program. Or, you may get a bachelor’s degree in another field of engineering and enter into a graduate degree program in biomedical engineering or you may also get on-the-job training in biomedical engineering.

Those prospective candidates who are willing to become biomedical engineers must take their high school courses that include the following subjects:

  • Chemistry

  • Physics

  • Biology


In addition, you must also take some math courses which include calculus. Taking courses in the following may also be helpful:

  • Drafting

  • Mechanical drawing

  • Computer programming


The bachelor’s degree programs in biomedical engineering would include laboratory-based courses and classroom-based courses in the following subjects:

The job market of biomedical engineers is projected to increase by 27% from the year 2012 to 2022. And yes, this rate is much faster when compared with the average of all occupations. As this is a small occupation, this faster growth would lead to only 5200 new jobs through this ten year period.
